WILLAERTS, Adam
(b. 1577, Antwerpen, d. 1664, Utrecht)

River Scene with Boats

1643
Oil on wood, 46 x 85 cm
Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

The present painting represents an example of Flemish-style landscapes which were popular in Utrecht and in the area of Delft and The Hague. The general design of the composition dates back at least twenty years in Willaerts's oeuvre. In this canvas the old painter was assisted by one of his sons.
