Eucharistic Fish and Loaves

3rd century
Fresco
Catacombs of St Callixtus, Rome

In Early Christian art, the fish is a widespread symbol of Christ, a motto and a compendium of the Christian faith. The picture shows a detail of the frescoes in the 'crypt of Lucina' in the catacombs of San Callisto.
