Catacombs of Praetextatus, Rome

Giovanni Battista de Rossi's (1822-1894) earliest excavations were carried out between 1847 and 1850 at the ancient Christian Catacomb of Praetextatus. His researches revealed the extent of the underground galleries at the site as well as the richness of the material remains.

The picture shows a detail of the mural in the so-called burial chamber of the "coronation" - the crowning with thorns - in the catacombs of Praetextatus.
