Mosaic
Santa Sabina, Rome

The 5th-century mosaics of the triumphal arch and the apse are largely lost in Santa Sabina, though as far as the apse is concerned, in the 16th century Taddeo Zuccari preserved the original design in his fresco, which seems to record the most important elements of the early Christian mosaic.

The only section of the original mosaic which still survives is the mosaic inscription on the entry wall, shown in the present picture. The text, framed by two female figures, tells of the construction of the church from a donation by Peter the Illyrian during the pontificate of Celestine I (422-432).
