PRE-ROMANESQUE SCULPTOR, German
(active 9th century in Metz)

The composition is modelled on classical equestrian bronze sculptures. The horseman corresponds to descriptions of Charlemagne by his contemporaries, but also recalls portraits of Charles the Bald.
