Flight of Paul

c. 800
Fresco
St. Proculus, Naturno

The church of St. Proculus was built towards the end of the eighth century. It contains several frescoes painted between the 8th and 10th centuries. The most famous fresco is a painting of the "flight of Paul" executed in a very simplified manner. It shows St. Paul on his escape from Damascus: he is let down the town wall on a rope. The apostle is depicted above a meander frieze almost as if on a swing, and the figure is executed in a naive and very reduced style. His body consists of the sweeps of his garment; his face appears flat and devoid of contours and modeling with the exception of the eyes, nose and mouth.

According to another interpretation the painting depicts St. Proculus himself. He was the bishop of Verona in the 4th century and had to flee from persecution.

The frescoes were probably produced by badly trained artists.
