Architecture and sculpture merging with each other is a characteristic feature of the Romanesque in the west of France. It is succinctly expressed in the archivolt portal of the former collegiate church of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Tour in Aulnay-de-Saintogne (Charente-Maritime). There are four archivolts in the portal of the south transept, and the three outer ones show a large number of small figures arranged radially. As each figure was carved separately from a single stone, every stone in the archivolts has two functions: decorative, and supporting the arch.
