Codex Wittekundeus

990s
Manuscript (Ms. Theol. Lat. fol.1), 300 x 190 mm
Staatsbibliothek, Berlin

This codex was produced in the Carolingian writing school in Fulda.

The full-page miniature on folio 14v depicts the Evangelist St Matthew seated writing his Gospel between two columns before a wall. The columns and arches framing the picture, and the meaningful construction (Heavenly Jerusalem) rising up behind the throne are so close to the earlier Carolingian model that one can assume with some certainty that the artist in Fulda based his composition and design of detail on such earlier codices.
