Berthold Sacramentary, folio 104v

1215-17
Manuscript (MS M.710), vellum, 293 x 204 mm
The Morgan Library and Museum, New York

The picture shows folio 104v with a full-page miniature featuring the Martyrdom of St Lawrence.

Saint Lawrence was a 3rd-century Roman deacon martyred on August 10, 258, under Emperor Valerian. Ordered to surrender the church treasures, he presented the poor and sick instead. Sentenced to death by roasting on a gridiron, he famously joked, "Turn me over; I am well done on this side."

Saint Lawrence's feast day is August 10 (see August in the calendar).

The protective silk is lifted; the folio contains an embroidered repair.
