Berthold Sacramentary, folio 110r

1215-17
Manuscript (MS M.710), vellum, 293 x 204 mm
The Morgan Library and Museum, New York

The picture shows folio 110r. It contains a half-page miniature depicting Salome delivering the head of St John the Baptist to Herod.

Saint John the Baptist was beheaded in prison by order of Herod Antipas, ruler of Galilee, prompted by Herodias and her daughter Salome around 28-36 CE at the fortress of Machaerus. John had publicly criticised Herod's unlawful marriage to Herodias, his half-brother's wife.

Saint John the Baptist's feast day, commemorating his death, is on August 29 (see August in the calendar).
