De Lisle Psalter

c. 1310
Manuscript (Arundel Ms. 83. pt. II), 345 x 230 mm
British Library, London

The original of this codex was a gift from Baron Robert de Lisle to his daughters, two nuns at Chicksands Priory. The psalter text has been lost, only 19 folios containing a calendar and a series of large, upright-rectangular miniatures showing scenes from the life of Christ. These scenes are rich in figures and actions, and are painted within complicated, very decorative quatrefoil borders. The anonymous English illuminator copied French models based on the famous Jean Pucelle, but produced something considerably more monumental.

The six-part miniature on folio 124v shows a sequence of pictures from the story of Christ's childhood and therefore also from the life of the Virgin.
