Luttrell Psalter

1325-40
Manuscript (Add. MS 42130), 350 x 245 mm
British Library, London

The Luttrell Psalter, an English 14th-century parchment codex, contains a Psalter with calendar and some additional material. Its 309 folios are richly decorated.

Surprisingly, we can encounter a vast amount of bizarre, grotesque and often apparently subversive imagery at the margins of devotional manuscripts, the capitals of churches and cloisters and the undersides of choir stalls. The present image shows folio 184r of the Luttrell Psalter. On the margin, a dragon on wheels and a two-headed gryllus (field cricket), apparently on stilts, are depicted.
