Codex Manesse

1310-40
Manuscript (Codex Pal. Germ. 848), 355 x 250 mm
Universitätsbibliothek, Heidelberg

This miniature is from the famous Codex Manesse, the most comprehensive collection of ballads and epigrammatic poetry in Middle High German language. It depicts the Jewish Minnesinger (troubadour) Süsskind von Trit, distinguished by his pointed Jewish hat. In medieval Europe, officially the Jews were tolerated by both Church and state. In several countries they contributed notably to national culture.
