This folio depicting the Holy Family at Supper is from the Book of Hours of Catherine of Cleves. The Hours of Catherine of Cleves was commissioned for Catherine, Duchess of Guelders and Countess of Zutphen, upon the occasion of her marriage to Arnold, Duke of Guelders, on 26 January 1430. It was produced in Utrecht by the anonymous Netherlandish artist known as the Master of Catherine of Cleves, completed only after 1434, probably around 1440. It is one of the most lavishly illuminated manuscripts, decorated with 157 illuminations, to survive from the 15th century. It is a splendid example of a courtly manuscript filled with imaginative miniatures. The scene of the Holy Family at Supper testifies the high quality of art in the Northern Netherlands in the early fifteenth century.
