This miniature on folio 1v illustrates the prayer of the Hours of the Virgin to be said at Matins, i.e. in the morning. On the left, the recipient of this Book of Hours, Catherine of Cleves, kneels with open prayer book before the Mother of God and the Christ Child. Mary appears in a burst of radiant light and on a crescent moon, and is thus being compared with the apocalyptic woman from the twelfth book of Revelation - a motif that enjoyed great popularity from the 12th century onward throughout the Middle Ages.
