Très Belles Heures de Notre-Dame du Duc de Berry

c. 1380
Manuscript (Ms. nouv. acq. lat. 3093), 280 c 200 mm
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

This is a page (folio 42r) from the Très Belles Heures de Notre-Dame du Duc de Berry, showing the Nativity. Mary, Joseph and the Child have found refuge under a simple roof. In the foreground, shown very small in scale, the ox and ass crowd round the crib. The angel of the Annunciation appears in the initial underneath, while in the bas-de-page three shepherds can be seen with dogs and sheep in a hilly landscape.

The manuscript was executed for Charles V and ultimately owned by the Duke of Berry.
