Très Belles Heures de Notre-Dame du Duc de Berry

c. 1380
Manuscript (Ms. nouv. acq. lat. 3093)
Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris

The main miniature on folio 68r of the manuscript illustrates Marian Vespers with Christ's first miracle, when he turned water into wine at the wedding in Cana. The wedding party eat beneath a wooden barrel vault depicted in a convincing perspective. The bride sits in the centre behind the table. The older pair to her right are probably her parents. To her left sits Mary, her hands raised in prayer as she watches Christ blessing a jug of wine held out by a servant kneeling before the table. A second man kneels at his side cutting meat. The groom is not shown.
