MINIATURIST, Bohemian
(active 1400-1410)

The Travels of the Knight, John Mandeville

1400-10
Manuscript (Additional Ms. 24189)
British Library, London

This parchment codex contains no text, but a series of 28 full-page miniatures (tinted grisaille drawings on green parchment) illustrating the Voyage d'outre mer, attributed to Sir John Mandeville (active c. 1357). The miniaturist is called the Master of the Mandeville Travels.

The picture shows the lowwer part of the drawing on folio 16. It shows glass-blowing: the glass, having been heated in the furnace which a boy is stoking on the right, is then blown and spun. Behind the furnace the master inspects the finished pots.
