Book of Hours (La Flora)

1483-98
Manuscript (I. B. 51)
Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III, Naples

This Book of Hours follows the usual scheme, with the calendar at the beginning. each month being laid out over two pages, illustrated with allegorical scenes within wide architectural frames. The text is decorated with over one hundred miniatures.

The decoration of the manuscript is the fruit of collaboration between a number of illuminators working under the direction of an entrepreneur who succeeded in imposing unity and balance on the whole. The most important illuminators working on the codex were Simon Marmion, Gerard Horenbout and the so-called Master of the Dresden Hours.

Folio 9 illustrates the month of July in the calendar.
