Incunable (MS 5793)
Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, Paris

In the Middle Ages ghosts were widely believed in and even priests and monks reported dreams in which dead men returned. The miniature on folio 76v of a 15th-century manuscript containing a French version of Boccaccio shows the ghost of a drowned man appearing to a sleeper.
