This book cover once adorned the Lorsch gospels. The turned metal frames surrounding the five early 9th-century ivory panels were a late addition, made to match the front cover, which was kept in Rome.

In the centre the Virgin Mary sits enthroned holding the child, accompanied by Zachariah in the robes of a priest on her right and St John the baptist holding a blank scroll on her left.
