Mosaic
Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome

Mary's outer garment is gold and covered with intricate embroidery. She is further adorned with a bejewelled collar and a gold crown. Her features differ in style from those of the other figures in the mosaic. A possible explanation could be that Mary's face was patterned after the oldest Mary icon in Rome, housed in Santa Maria Nova.
