Santa Maria Assunta: Interior view

c. 1050
Santa Maria Assunta, Torcello

The picture shows the interior of the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on Torcello toward the iconostasis and chancel. The iconostasis has six columns and marble plutei with peacocks and lions facing each other, probably from the 11th century, and 14th-century panels depicting the Virgin and Apostles. The mosaic on the apse vault shows the Hodegetria Virgin.
