Christ Pantocrator

c. 1180
Fresco with secco applications
Panteón de los Reyes, Colegiata de San Isidoro, León

The wall and ceiling frescoes in the Panteón de los Reyes of San Isidoro in León, executed by a Spanish (or southern French) artist and his workshop, belong among the outstanding achievements of Romanesque painting not only in Spain but throughout Europe. The Christ Pantocrator, part of the cycle of wall and ceiling frescoes, contains an iconographically quite rare representation of the Evangelists, their faces being replaced by those of the animals associated with them.
