ROMANESQUE PAINTER, English
(active around 1180 in Canterbury)

Paul Throwing a Snake into the Fire

c. 1180
Fresco
Cathedral, Canterbury

The close political contact between England and the eastern Mediterranean region explains the strong Byzantine influence in English Romanesque painting. Unfortunately only very few examples of fresco painting survived. The picture shows an example from the Saint Anselm's Chapel in Canterbury Cathedral.
