The Virgin Mary and Child

c. 1200
Fresco
Notre-Dame, Montmorillon

The apse vault of the Chapelle Sainte-Cathérine in the church of Notre-Dame in Montmorillon, near Poitiers, is taken up by a representation of the enthroned Virgin Mary with the Christ Child. Although the subject is typically Byzantine, the style is not. It is softer and more animated and imparts to the divine couple a graceful appearance.
