The picture shows the central part of the back of the altar. Here are the wings which can be opened to reveal the tomb of St Ambrose. The two lower medallions depicts St Ambrose blessing Angilbert, Bishop of Milan (left) and Vuolvinius, the goldsmith (right), whose names are given in the inscriptions. They are below the winged archangels Michael and Gabriel.
