This magnificent oval bowl, crafted out of a sard probably in Byzantium during the tenth century, received its present mount in Paris. 1665. It was given a gold lid, designed with vivid flower traceries framing enamelled gold pictures. The four medallions, echoed by four small battle scenes on the foot, represent the battles of Alexander the Great, a subject highly appreciated in the seventeenth century. The small pictures on enamel derive from engravings by Antonio Tempesta.
