This cabinet standing on a table-shaped support is a typical 17th-century Dutch layette cupboard. It contained very few separate compartments, so had plenty of room for the clothes of the baby. The decoration of this cupboard is remarkable for its high quality, fashionable nature and the contrast between the cupboard and its stand.
In addition to its use in silver and gold objects, the auricular style proved eminently suited to the production of the sculpted parts of furniture, as can be seen in the legs of this cupboard.
