Flute glass

1650-75
Clear glass with diamond-point engraving, height 36 cm
Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam

This is an example of the type of flute glass blown 'à la façon de Venise' which became fashionable in the Netherlands in the second half of the seventeenth century. Engraved on it by an anonymous engraver is a portrait of Prince Frederik Hendrik in full armour.

Similar glasses were made a century earlier in Venice.
