UNKNOWN POTTER, Dutch
(active in 1650s in Delft)

Plaque with View of the Tomb of William the Silent

1657
Tin-glazed earthenware, 31 x 24 cm
Gemeente Musea, Delft

There must have been quite a large market in Delft for illustrations of the tomb of Prince William the Silent, designed by Hendrick de Keyser and completed in 1621. It took symbolic significance for the Dutch people. This Delft plaque, painted by Isaack Junius (active in Delft in the 1640s), is an expression of the political sentiments of the country that time.
