Ewers

c. 1675
Faience, height 61 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

These ewers derive from models provided by a goldsmith, Claude I Ballin, for Versailles: the dragons serving as handles are typical of his inventions. On the bellies two bacchanalia are represented, a theme that was frequently adopted for formal tableware. The craftsman was inspired by two engravings belonging to Nicolas Chaperon and Michel Dorigny.
