(active 1735-1740 in Rouen)

Tray

1735-40
Faience, 46 x 62 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

The tray depicts Juno with Aeolus, an episode drawn from the Aeneid, but also symbolizing "air". It belongs to a cycle of four compositions by Louis de Boullogne devoted to the elements, distributed in the form of prints after 1717-18. The tray has been attributed to one of the greatest earthenware artists in Rouen at the time, Pierre Chapelle II.
