Einhardsbasilika, Steinbach bei Michelstadt

In 815 Louis the Pious granted Michelstadt and Seligenstadt (Mulinheim) to his faithful courtier, Einhard, who later built churches there and fitted them with relics, stolen from the Catacombs in Rome. One church still stands.

Einhard was the counselor and biographer of Emperor Charlemagne.

The photo shows the exterior of the basilica in its present state. The church formerly had three naves.
