Cathedral, Magdeburg

The rebuilding of Magdeburg Cathedral began in 1209, the old cathedral having been destroyed by fire in 1207. The rebuilding began with the construction of the ambulatory and its radiating chapels, but neither their structure nor their forms are really Gothic. Only with a second building phase, when the choir gallery was built, did a truly Gothic character appear. Antique columns from the old cathedral, that Emperor Otto I, under whom the Magdeburg archbishopric had been founded in 968, appropriated from Italy to bestow on his cathedral a certain air of nobility, were used in the choir.

The photo shows the choir with re-used antique columns from the earlier Ottonian building.
