Cathedral, Wells, Somerset

In Wells Cathedral in the 1290s an octagonal chapter house was built, one of the most beautiful in England. Its basic form is the richly decorated vault. Like a palm-tree, the sturdy central column supports the expansive dome of the vault on which countless closely packed tierceron ribs stretch upwards.

The photo shows the interior of the Chapter House, looking south.
