Drassanes, Barcelona

In the Drassanes, the shipyards, Barcelona possesses a unique historic industrial monument. Toward the end of the 13th century, the Aragonese king Pere el Gran ordered new shipyards to be constructed because the old buildings had become inadequate. Initially they were constructed as open yards with porticos and military defences, but these were extended in the 14th century as eight parallel covered halls. Up to 30 galleys could be repaired in them at the same time. To provide room for the construction of still larger ships, the two central halls were combined and the roof raised in the mid 18th century.
