Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, Frankfurt am Main

The present Gothic Frankfurt Cathedral (Frankfurter Dom) is the third church on the same site, its origin can be traced back to the 7th century. Its tower, built between 1415 and 1514, is a free variation of the Freiburg tower octagon. Here too the octagon rests on a square base, the corner pinnacles of which are linked to it by means of small flying buttresses. The unconventionally formed dome is a reproduction of the contemporary imperial crown, adopted because it was in this church that the seven Electors of the Holy Roman Empire chose the emperor.
