In the Late Gothic era many churches were completed on which work had been interrupted for a long time. As the large main front was usually constructed after the completion of the church, architects of the 15th and 16th centuries were particularly on demand for work on fronts. One of the earliest fronts of French Late Gothic is that of the cathedral of Tours, on which work was carried out from 1440 until 1537. It was only a matter of giving a new finish to a Romanesque twin-towered front.

The openwork gables, the rose window, and the statue niches on the buttresses present High Gothic models translated into Flamboyant. The towers, however, show Renaissance forms, not surprisingly in the region of the Loire Valley castles.

The photo shows the west front of the cathedral.
