The Castillo de Manzanares el Real, a castle of the Mendoza family, was begun in 1435, and rebuilt, most probably by Juan Guas, after 1473. This construction illustrates the transition from fortress to elegant castle. Although the fortress aspect remained, the sculptural finish of the allure and towers lends a decorative character to the exterior.
