The Jesuit church of St. Michael's in Munich, built at the end of the sixteenth century, was the model for many later Baroque churches in south Germany. The wall piers, the broad windowless barrel vault with traverse arches, and the chapels with lateral barrel vaults and galleries inspired the designs of numerous later churches.

Begun in 1583, the various designs and proposals were worked over by Friedrich Sustris, the court artist to William V, Duke of Bavaria and the construction was supervised by building foremen.
