Château, Chambord (Loir-et-Cher)

In its general appearance Chambord is entirely French and still largely medieval. The massive round towers with their conical tops could be matched in any fifteenth-century château. What is original is the treatment of the roof. Standing on the flat terrace of which it consists, the spectator has the impression of being surrounded by a forest of chimneys, turrets, and dormers, all different and all of the most complex form. The fantasy of the design bring this roof into line with the strangest inventions of Flamboyant Gothic.

The photo shows the roof of the château.
