Villa Selvatico Emo Capodilista: Exterior view

begun 1593

Battaglia Terme

The huge dome atop the imposing residential complex of the noble Selvatico family from Padua, rises high above the hill of Sant'Elena in Battaglia Terme. Although work began in 1593, construction of the villa was not completed until the 1640s. The completion of the building, with the creation of the monumental staircase that descends toward the river, should perhaps be attributed to Lorenzo Bedogni (c. 1600-1670), an architect and painter from Reggio Emilia. Bedogni was also engaged as a painter of architectural motifs in the building. In 1649 he was joined in this decorative undertaking first by Pietro Liberi and then by Luca Ferrari, known as Luca da Reggio.
