Collegiate church, Zwettl

The Cistercian foundation of Zwettl dates from 1138. The church forms the centrepiece of the ensemble, and is notable for its unusually high tower (nearly one hundred meters) built by Josef Munggenast (1680-1741) in 1722-27 to plans by Matthias Steinl (1644-1727), a painter, engineer and architect. The figures, urns, and obelisks are cleverly fitted into the architectural structure as decorative forms. The Baroque dome is surmounted by a gilt figure of Christ.
