I was on pilgrimage to Rome last week and took a picture of a woman in a dark blue gown holding the head of St. John the Baptist. The remainder of his body is lying on the ground at her feet. I took the picture at one of the major churches in Rome. I thought I took it somewhere in the Vatican museums, but I am not sure. Do you have a fax number where I could send you a scanned copy so I can identify it? I would like to find a print to have framed for my school library. Mary Sine St. Charles Borromeo School 5000 N. I was delighted to discover your internet site! You have an excellent representation of sixteenth- and seventeenth- century Netherlandish and Flemish art; I was particularly pleased to find that the work of Hendrick Golzius found a place on your site. Perhaps in the future you could add some engravings of Martin Schongauer (Death of the Virgin or The Carrying of the Cross are quintessential) to complement your lovely selection of his paintings. Bravissimo!

I was introduced to Rafello "School at Athens" while taking a class in Christian Apologetics for Psychology. I was very intrigued by how much the world has not changed from 1510 in how we perceive or interact in the environment and people. Thanks for putting this great art out here for everyone to stumble on it like I did and have an enjoyable experince. I know nothing about fine art, but this site will be very educational for me to learn on my own.

I have been searching for about 25 years for the painting "Madonna of the Harpies"(detail),done by Andrea Del Sarto. Thanks to your site, I was able to finally have a dream come true! I saw this painting in the December, 1974 edition of "Southern Living" magazine and was amazed at the resemblance to my own mother! I even corresponded with the lady who was featured in the article and owned the print. It was given to her as a wedding present from her husband in 1921! She had told me if she ever saw a postcard of it, she would send it to me....which leads me to asking if you know if postcards are available? I would love to have one! Again, thank you so much!

I enjoyed looking at the tours. I am trying to locate the artist of a newly discovered painting that will soon go on auction for 3 million dollars. It is a painting of Madonna and Child enthroned with two angels. I think the artist is Italian and probably painted around 1300. The medium is tempra on wood. The size is 10x8 inches. The picture was featured in the London Times. It is considered one of the old masters. I will get extra credit in class if the artist can be identified. Thanks, Lea

It is good to see that the masters are dead but not forgotten. You have perpetuated their works and memories. Remember that in the Middle Ages the formula for concrete that was discovered by the Romans was lost and not 'discovered' again until much later in history. As a tourist guide in Malines I was very much surprised to find so many works made by our local artists. I was surprised to find a work of Faydherbe which can be seen in our cathedral. However,I do not agree with your statement that he made mostly smaller work. On the contrary he made many great statues, mausoleums, altars etc... It is true that we know better his greater works than the small ones. There was a very interesting exhibition here a couple of years ago showing beautifully carved smaller work. Anyway congratulations. Question: where do you get your info from? I thought from museums but I wonder how you stumbled on Faydherbes mausoleum of the Berthouts in the cathedral. Please note that we can find even better exemples of his works in the Mechlin cathedral, a wonderful mausoleum of Archbisshop Cruesen, considered as one of his masterpieces and a grand main altar. Can I be of any assistance? I wrote an illustrated book on Malines painters, architects and sculptors and some of them I find back on your site!!! I'm interested in web site design so I logged on to see your site (version with frames). Very nice! Check out www.useit.com however, they say the #1 mistake of web site desing is to use frames!

It is wonderful to have a site like this, to go too for comparison of art work found on the Internet auction services. It is a tremendous help for finding styles and techniques of known artists, to help the buyers make up their minds if there is a good likeness of a painting in question. Just think of the master pieces that are still out there and can be fround with much greater ease.

Mark Twain, on a trip through Rome, once said,"In Italy, whatever God did not create, Michelangelo did..." This statement was more out of annoyance but it's alternate implications are just as well taken. I have studied Michelangelo's life for around 9 years. Thank you for listing his works here online, as well as his varied assortment of studied drawings... I endeavor to emulate his work in my own drawings... To coin my own phrase," There were masters before him, but only students there after." Thanks again, for this wonderful assortment of his works, as well as the other artists honored here...

Am interested in learning biographical information on Adriaen Brouwer to determine possible genealogical connection with my paternal ancestral family, the Brewers (alternately spelled Brower, of Dutch/Welsh origin).

Thank you because from a very little village in the south of Catalonia it's possible to study art history. You've helped me to do some homework I had to do. Anyway, it´s worth seeing for itself.

I started using the Web Gallery of Art some months ago, for television program research. Now I visit frequently for pleasure, to renew my spirits, and to admire your fine Web craftwork. Best wishes for the new year. Please keep this wonderful 'net asset available and growing in the new century. With enthusiastic thanks, Joe Blatt

This is a very useful site. It has some very good text descriptions of teh pictures (more than most sites) to add to the pictures themselves.

Je découvre votre site avec admiration. Parmi tant de sites prétentieux ou sans intérêt - laids ou vulgaires, vous apportez beauté - simplicité - vérité - et compétence. Merci d'exister !
