Fabulous site: I visit it often! Can you make a correction? I noticed you had Albrecht Durer's "Portrait of a Clergyman"(1516) as being located in Vienna. It's in Washington, D.C. at the National Gallery of Art. It's one of my favourite portraits and I saw it at the N.G.A. in January this year.

This site is absolutely incredible! I've only been able to spend a short while browsing what's available and already gained immense amounts of information that will help me re-create costume of the past accurately and beautifully. We have even found more complete representations of certain armor pieces than are available in many books. Thanks for the good job and I'll be here often!

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN I'm a picture framing factory from Bangkok, Thailand and I just came back from SACA in Bologna, Italy last month. I just made up my mind to go into new business by importing, framing and distributing fine art poster to Thai market. Right now I have catalogues of EGIM, Graphique De France and some of Leslie Levy in my hand but I think it's not enough. I found your website from search engine and just want to know if you have poster of fine art and if possible, sending me your catalogue will be very appreciated. If you could do me a favor please kindly send it to this following address; Puvadol Suwanjinda Wichai Frame Products Ltd. 8/1-2 Mu12 Bangna-Trad rd. Dear Sir, Madame, we would be most obliged if you could obtain any information on an ancient art Painter Master signed J. VAN GELDER. As found on an interesting beautiful (supposed) very ancient landscape, of a primitive looking whitewashed large farm with primitive slim high entrance and two primitive window opening, all appearing to be without door or shutters. Yet part of a decorative whitewashed wall or built to contain wood clearing a little distance on the right, with what is a large walled yard. Set in a wooden clearing with rocky mountain backdrop in possibly a bright Autumn day and white and salmon coloured cumulus clouds. If ancient by that intricate talented feel of an old master's magic touch, it is very well preserved. Surely only the very well publicised ancient known arts are popular enough to be reproduced ... One name researched, may partain to a Flanders Artist, born in Anvers (Antwerpen) Belgium. Ironically his works are not chronicled in any Belgian Museums. The Dutch museums kindly Suggested South Africa as a possibility, which drew a blank. Further challenges arises, as we found that he worked most of his life in Italy specialising on royal portraits and was known to never sign them. But he apparently did two landscapes, one of a battlefield and the king's favourite orchard. He was also renamed GIOVANNI VINGELDRI. YOURS GRATEFULLY, COLIN HERR. PS, so far no news from Italy, but would be grateful for the Vatican's private art collection viewed on an authorised website to the public, and have misled address.

Colin Herr, colinherr@worldonline.co.za, J van GELDER.

HELLO, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TRULY ENLIGHTENING WEBSITE. I, OF ITALIAN DECENT, HAVE NEVER BEEN VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE HISTORY OF THE RENAISSANCE. I HAVE JUST FINISHED READING "BRUNELESCHI'S DOME" AND, SIMULTANEOUSLY, MY 12 YEAR OLD SON IS WRITING A REPORT ON DONATELLO. IN JUNE, WE ARE TAKING HIM TO FLORENCE AND VENICE FOR HIS FIRST TIME. IT SEEMS THAT ALL THINGS ARE CONVERGING AT ONE TIME FOR A REASON. YOUR WEBSITE SHOWED ME ARTWORK IN FLORENCE THAT I, ON MANY PREVIOUS BUSINESS TRIPS, HAD JUST WALKED BY BEFORE. LOOKING AT YOUR ENTRIES FOR MICHELANGELO AND DONATELLO GAVE ME THRILLS OF ANTICIPATION TOWARDS OUR UPCOMING TRIP. THANK YOU ISN'T ADEQUATE ENOUGH TO TELL YOU HOW MUCH I APPRECIATE SEEING ALL THIS GRAND ARTWORK IN ONE SPOT. HOW INSPIRATIONAL.!!

The Web Gallery of Art is the most extraordinary site on the web, for my tastes. The selection of paintings is absolutely amazing. I have recently bought a book titled A Worldly Art - The Dutch Republic 1585 -1718 . I couldn't believe how many of the (often rather obscure) artists' paintings are on the Web Gallery of Art site. Who supports it and maintains it? Please, keep it up. It's enriching people's lives in a big way. Forever grateful, JD

I have a picture of three faces These faces are stains of the high priest and two others are first the holy shroud of Turin and Vericonas Veil. On the stain picture it shows a punture wound on the forehead in the exact same area as the Holy shroud and there is an open wound on the cheek where the skin has been broken, on the other stain it shows a napkin on the forehead. I asked God this question If the holy shroud is real show me Vericonas veil. My lord gave it to me. Also I have shown this picture to the F.B.I. because it also shows Jack Kennedy with his hands to his face. on one stain I told the F.B.I. how looked where we can only see his foot in the photograph, but on the stain I can see his whole body, and in turning the picture it shows Jack Ruby. Also three different guns and they are at different angles the reason I took this picture which is covered with tar on one side and on the other side, shows Christ my Lord with the sign he is famous for. which to me is how his hand look after he was nailed to the cros, the thumb went imeditaly inward. I want to now take this moment to thank you for reading this. I have a gift from God, I have also seen deamons in the church on the walls. one more point,I showed this picture to my lawyer. George La Cava he looked at the picture and said I see the face of Jesus. Since cannot come back in the flesh, they come back as stains or can be photographed well get in the way of the photo and blurr it.

Web Gallery is a marvellous way to get to know and recognize both well known and more obscure Grand Masters of European art. There is an error in the entries for Jan and Hubert van Eyck. It states that both artists were born in Maeseyck near Mons. In fact I believe that Maeseyck is not near Mons in the Belgian province of Hainaut; but is in fact in the province of Limburg just inside the Belgian border from the Dutch province of the same name. The nearest major centre is the Dutch city of Maastricht further up the river Meuse (Dutch- Maas).

Very comprehensive website, indeed. I am completing a short research project on Simone Martini's "St. Catherine of Alexandria" here at our National gallery. I greatly appreciated the biographical elements and the images which helped me to see a general trend in Martini's style. By the way, an online scanned picture of St. Catherine of Alexandria, can be obtained (through permission of course) by going to http://cybermuse.gallery.ca/ng/ and searching for the piece. The art gallery's catalogue entry, audio guide and scan are available for viewing.

I think that most of the paintings look much better in their frames. I have just sent a postcard of Fra Filippo Lippi's Madonna in the Pitti Gallery. It is not the same without its gorgeous frame. Frames complete the work of art and in many cases, like this one, they enhance the image. besides, one feels more in a gallery if one sees the whole thing, frame and all. Maria Brown

C'est en cherchant des renseignements sur Carel van Mander que j' ai découvert votre site. Bien que je n'ai pas trouvé ce que je cherchais, j' ai néanmoins passé un excellent moment dans votre galerie.

Jesus, this is really modern times! We found what we were looking for without any hope when we started. Thank you. Curious what we found? "Laantje van Middelharnis" by Hobbema; lovely painting with miraculous history.
