This a magnificent site. My wife and I were in Rome once, about 8 years ago, and I've nver forgotten it. St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican were awesome. This web page just brings it all back, although, obviously we did't see it all. It might interest you to know that I got to this site by looking at an old issue of National Geographic, which re-kindled my interest in the Glory of Rome. The music is a nice touch, and I thank you for providing this site to the world.

OUTSTANDING: After attending Catholic schools for 12 years, 40 years ago, I have heard many stories about Michaelangelo and how he spent years on his back painting the Sistine Chapel. But I never had the pleasure of actually seeing any of his great works until I discovered your web site. I am very appreciative for the expertise that is exhibited in the construction of this fine site. THANK YOU

I am awed by your site! We have just installed a video projection system in our beautiful Gothic-style church, The First United Methodist Church of Vineland, New Jersey, where I am honored to be pastor. There are two projection areas on either side of the stone-work above the altar--the wall (no screen!) which project the same images. The art work that you have made available will beautifully enhance our church, and our worship, as sermon material is expanded to included these works of art. Your link to biographical material, and the search engines are wonderful! I hope you might visit The Bible Through the Seasons which I entered as my homepage. Thank you so much! Pastor Nick Connolly

Your collection is far more important than you may have realized. We (especially USA) have been in a mini-dark age, and now emerging. Nothing will catalyze the next coming golden age of art more than such a high-quality, immediately accessible, gallery sure to delight and inspire any of those likely to help bring back the spirituality (in all senses of the word) of art, that aspect which gives so much pleasure to the artist and viewer. People are yearning, but they see Kincade etc. Eventually youth will see the difference and rise to higher levels. You have greatly helped me in my attempts to re-learn the style methods of the Flemish Primitives. Thank you. Reed Lockwood

Pope Sixtus as all the Popes was definitely inspired by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Family and Holy Trinity. However, it is not easy for man to perform God's assignments purely guided by His Mind and Heart, if he is not supported by the constant prayers by the Communion of Saints. Is not that what the Fatima prayers is all about? May the Holy Trinity, the Holy Family together with St Michael the Archangel and all the Holy Angels in Heaven and all the Holy Saints constantly intercede for the Pope and all the burdens that the Lord of Divine Mercy has assigned to him day by day, whether they are among the living or among the departed soul, like a burning Holy Baptism candle (with the Alpa and Omega inscription) for the Lord 1.e.immersed in the Sea of Mercy of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Lord of Divine Mercy his one and only, sole and exclusive costant rock, shield, fortress, canopy and head, resuscitated and sustained by the Holy Spirit and as such will cause the Holy Trinity to light in the same manner all those who bless him and pray for him or otherwise think of him , as well as those for whom he prays and blesses constantly, continuously, permanently, with immediate effect, so that a sea of light will be dipersed over the earth uniting all men and saints in an ever growing communion of Saints, until His Kingdom is complete on earth as it is in Heaven. May such burdens and assignments from the Lord be never more than the Pope and the intercessors can bear that they may constantly reflect the Glory of the Lord and be shielded from the follies of the world. In the name of God, the Father, God, the Son (His only Beloved Son, the Lord of Divine Mercy, Our Lord Jesus Christ) and God,the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Your site is wonderful. Very easy on the eyes. I found it on www.reallyfirst.com while searching for images for my site. I will go to the individual sites, but I was wondering if anyone knew if I could use 10-15 images of these fine art paintings on my site giving proper credit (of course)? I have a Western Astrology site and thought Classical Fine Art with a focus on the Greek Mythology would add to its content (no monetary charge for this). Great site! Wondering if anybody can help me find a picture I once saw and can't remember where: it portrayed a single mounted soldier (a Hussar or Dragon, maybe late 1700 or 1800), standing and listening to some unknown noise from the fog of dawn, undecided wether he actually heard anything, very tense. Maybe French or Russian. Titel sounded something "the watch at dawn" or "night watch" (Not Rembrandts!!) Know it, anybody? Thanks!

Our daughter sent us a postcard of Portrait of Father Galeazzo Campi by Giulio Campi, 1535 Uffizi, Florence. We had never visited this site before and it was interesting to learn that there is an artist of note by the Campi family name. Can you tell us where we might find out more about the artist? Many thanks.

My husband and I were in Rome recently on our honeymoon. When we walked into the Sistine Chapel, we where in complete awe the ceiling was magnificent! We heard about the ceiling getting "the cleaning". We read critics didn't think the cleaning was true to color. I am a professinal artist, I think, it was Michelangelo's intention to paint with bright colors, because a there is a masterpiece of the holy family he created. That showed his colors were intentionly vibrant. Thank you for posting these wonderful frescos on the inter- net. I was reliving my recent to visit to the Sistine Chapel all over again!! A painting of ten women by an unknown master in ca. 1300 caught my eye in that the outfits of the women are very modern for the 14th century. Could you please tell me the name of a museum where the painting currently hangs. Or, could you send me a postcard of a reproduction much larger than depicted on your website, so I might have a really good close at the picture. I thought that it should be published in one of the magazines like Bazaar, Vogue, or Vanity Fair. Thanks for the entertainment. Jean Boutcher, J.Boutcher.1@alumni.NYU.edu

I purchased a painting called "Windmill at Wijk" and found that the artist was Jacob Ruisdael. The painting is 25"X36" and is in a 4 1/2" wood frame and the larger version showing a portion of the painting. I bought it at an Antique shop and was told that it was purchased from a sale that belonged to the heiress of the founder of Pittsburg Glass. I would like to find out how to tell how old this is and I also have a small print of the full painting that my mother purchased sometime around 50 yrs.+/- ago.

Nice web site, however, Ghiberti's bronze panel which won the competition against Brancacci is incorectly labeled "Sacrice of Abraham", when it SHOULD read "Sacrifice of Isaac". An important mistake which should be corrected. This form of Isaac is in a classical form with the sleek, slender, nude torso turning in a "Hercules" like way. There's much focus on the decorative details of the piece, including drapery, landscapes, and trees.

Great site, great images. I would like to add that it would be helpful to know what images are available in print and which ones are not. Your direction to Allposters was useful although, they had no listing for select periods and artists listed on your site such as, Lucas Van Leyden. Thank you.

Hello. I have visited your site as part of my "Run Across the Internet". I am attempting to visit 10,000 sites in 100 days in order to raise awareness of Ankylosing Spondylitis, a chronic degenerative rheumatic disease that affects the spine and neck, often making the joints and vertbrae stiffen and fuse together. People with AS often have chronic pain and gradually lose flexibility and range of motion in their joints until they can not turn their heads or bend their backs. It's like being in a straight jacket for the entire rest of your life. To learn more, please visit the Spondylitis Association: http://www.StopAS.org or the Spondyville Support Group: http://www.spondyville.com Your pal, Stiffy the SnowSpondy

I have worked for the San Diego County Library System for 22 years and I was using your website to find a particular artist and work of. I did not find him, but enjoyed your website. It will be very helpful to me in the future, for reference work. I don't know if you could help me, but the artist's name was: Charles Lewis, a British Painter, 1830-92. The particular work is called, "Reading By The Window". If this is not possible, I thank you very much for the enjoyment of your website and look forward to using it in the future.
