Although I have known his name and some of his work, I began to research Leonardo da Vinci because of The Da Vinci Code. (One of the positives of Dan Brown's book is that, hopefully, it has aroused a desire in its readers to know more!) In my "quest", I learned of Verrocchio and discovered this website searching for more information on him. What a treasure I unearthed! The art, the information, the presentation, the highlighted links...have transported me to beautiful, fascinating, and exciting discoveries. Thank you!

In my last comment I neglected to note that I will be in Budapest this summer. I am a Joycean and would have been with the International Joyce group, but I am coming separately in June. Are you an academic? Would there be a chance to meeting you in Budapest? I am Professor of English Emeritus at the University of Connecticut and write about art and drama and literature. It would be a pleasure to meet you.

I had just been to the Galleria Doria-Pamphili, and wanted to retrace a portrait seen there of Tancred and Erminia, from Tasso's Gerusalemme Liberata. Couldn't remember the title or the name of the painter. Google took me to your site. What a pleasant discovery! I've bookmarked it and will use it regularly- to complement my visits to Italian and European museums. And I did find what I was looking for... Guercino's painting. I found this treasure and I do appreciate it. Furthermore I just have been to Budapest and I am very happy you have the paintings in the collection. I though felt sorry there is missing the modern and contemporary art. Do you know about a sister organization. In the other side to have only european paintors give a great oportunitty to have painters of other partts of the world. In Mexico we have vety good ones. Thanks for your effort and I hope it will growth HR

I would like to extend my warmest thanks for the time and efforts you give in developing and maintaining this excellent collection of paintings through your website. This virtual museum is indeed the best of its kind amongst all the similar sites I have been visiting. I was astonished to find out that it exists since 1997. Imagine, I was searching for something similar for at least 6 months. It is a tremendous find for me and now, I really do not know were to begin from. At any case, I am confident that it will satisfy my need to learn more and more about European art. Thank you once more for the fine work and please continue in the same path.

18th February 2006 Dear Editors, Congratulations on your outstanding achievement! The Web Gallery of Art is not only an excellent research tool for art historians and students of the history of art but also an almost inexhaustible source of pleasure for laymen like me who simply enjoy looking at good pictures or want to become better acquainted with the histoy of European painting and art in general. I think that to most of the users of the Web Gallery the short biographies of the artists and the brief informative comments on their works will be of great help. Three other merits of your website must also be mentioned: its great user-friendliness, the high technical quality of its virtual pictures and, last but not least, its electronic postcard service, which enables users to give their e-mails to friends a personal touch. All in all, the Web Gallery of Art deserves the highest praise! Yours faithfully, Eduard Weber

I purchased a framed painting from a thrift store. It is "Woman with a Parasol" by Claude Monet. It is framed in an old looking frame and the is on canvas? Actually feels like hardboard. The painting is signed by Monet and says 75 next to it. The back is covered in paper and has a paper sticker attached. This states. No. PM2068 Claude Monet, 1840-1926, Woman with a Parasol. Next line reads: Canvas, .997 X .813 cm (291/4 X 32 in.) Next line reads: Lent by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon, National Gallery of Art, Washington. Bottom of label says Frame = Mostly Frames, Philadelphia What do I own now? Is this just a reproduction of the real one that hangs in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Do they ever sell one of their real paintings and could this possibly be valuable? Thank you for any help from anyone. Susan

,,a fantastic site,,unmissable, wonderous,,,just like recently i was invited to a pole dancing club by a friend of mine (im 76) ,,but after seeing the flyers for this place i decided to decline his offer and stay at home. I mentioned to my wife (83) where i would have been and she said ,,well i wont let you feel left out,, and disappeared to the bedroom,,appearing 45 mins later dressed as a cat,,she tried in vain to dance seductivley breaking a vase with her tail flicking,,and after about 2 hours of dancing ( interspersed with going to the toilet 5 times and losing her false teeth) she was stripped nearly naked , trying to look ultra horny she stumbled over her 1 inch heels and broke an occasional table which had been bought by her mother. I rang the emergency services and was blushingly picked up by sympathetic but giggly paramedics who placed her onto a stretcher along with 1 broken shoe and her pen-marker dotted freckles running down her flushed cheeks. Our cat Pickles has never come back since that night. Kind regards George.

I am excited about finding this website and discovering that it will allow me to search for works of art and art history. I am 61 years old and have begun a study , a year ago of , The Italian Renaissance, and Great Artists of the Italian Renaissance. I have created a journal that started a year ago and began with Duccio and Giotto and have moved along slowly, applying my awareness of such great beauty to my consciousness and sharing this light with others who may see its beauty. It is rewarding to know that this website exists and it is thanks to Google that I found it. I am looking forward to many hours well spent in this art world of the internet in the hope of capturing Life's meaning thorugh the genius of these great contributors.

This is one of the most wonderful, beautiful sites relating to culture that I have seen so far. Its unique quality is the fact that it provides a review of the complete works of selected artists. It would be even better if the selection could extend as to include later arts and artists, so as artists that originated and/or worked in other parts of Europe. I believe that it would be a revelation for people from Western Europe to see the magnificent achievements of Byzantine and Serbian medieval wall or icon painting.

To my great joy i ended up on this wonderful site. The combination of art and music is an excellent idea. Amazingly what brought me here is the use of the word HU in your address. Do you know what it means? It means the light and sound of spirit. Surely this site reflects the light (paintings) and the sound (of music)of spirit. You can also sing that word HU for the upliftment of soul. Well as an art lover, i thank you for your beautiful work.

Thanks for Your perfect work! That´s mysterious to find more and more excellent (for me, stupid, sure unknown) paintings from this time period.
