Abbey Church of Santa María, Ripoll

Probably the most comprehensive Christian iconographical program of the period is on the west façade of the abbey church of Ripoll in Catalonia. The regrettable damage to the sculptures was a result of fire in the monastery in 1835. The portal has no tympanum and is stepped with seven archivolts supported by pilasters and columns. The third archivolt is supported by the column statues of the Apostles Peter and Paul, and shows a number of scenes from the life and martyrdom of the two saints. The façade which surrounds the portal is richly decorated with figures and is divided into six registers.
