| Description: This tour provides an overview of the visual arts in the Romantic period, roughly defined as 1770-1840, specifically painting and, to a lesser extent, sculpture. We describe Romanticism across various European countries and America, where trends in late 18th-century Britain significantly influenced painters. We describe Romantic painters' preferred themes, such as landscapes, portraits and history paintings, treated in the Romantic spirit; new themes with heroic, violent, supernatural imagery; and themes related to national identity and pride.
